An evidence-based SEO content refresh checklist

Improving an existing page can be more useful than publishing another article targeting the same intent. Use search data to identify the right URL, improve what readers need and measure the outcome without assuming a ranking gain.

Start with the page and its search intent

Use Search Console opportunity analysis to identify relevant queries, then validate the page with the technical SEO audit checklist.

Step 1

Find pages with evidence of demand

In Google Search Console, review pages receiving impressions and compare complete periods. Prioritize relevant pages with a clear purpose, not simply the pages with the largest raw impression count.

Step 2

Match queries to page intent

Inspect queries associated with the URL. Decide whether searchers want a definition, tutorial, comparison or product page. Do not target unrelated terms just because they appear in a report.

Step 3

Check answer completeness

Review the opening explanation, headings, examples, constraints and supporting evidence. Add information that helps readers make a decision; avoid padding to reach an arbitrary word count.

Step 4

Update facts and remove stale claims

Verify dates, prices, product features, screenshots and outbound references. Remove statements that cannot be supported and never invent customer outcomes or citations.

Step 5

Improve titles and snippets carefully

Write a distinct title that describes the page and matches its primary intent. Search engines may generate a different snippet, so avoid treating the meta description as a guarantee.

Step 6

Add relevant internal links

Link to genuinely related guides, tools and product explanations using descriptive anchors. Links should help readers continue their task and point to the preferred canonical URL.

Step 7

Record the change and measure later

Record the URL, query theme, change date and hypothesis. Compare clicks, impressions, CTR and average position over a suitable period, accounting for seasonality and other changes.

Record the experiment
